1)The Rock Fort
Situated 272ft above the city on the banks of the
river Cauvery, the temple is dedicated to Lord
Vinayaka. A single rock cut into 437 steps, leads to
the temple. Along the way to temple there are
landings and shrines.
2)The Sri Ranganathaswamy Temple
Located at Sri Rangam Island in the middle of the
Cauvery river,this temple was built by various
dynasties including the cheras, Pandyas,Cholas,
Hoysalas and the Vijayanagar Empire between 13th and
18th centuries.
3)Sri Jambukeswara Temple
Situated about 2.5 km east of the Sri
Ranganathaswamy temple, it has an interior with a
large central court, an excellent example of the
Dravidian architecture of A D 1600. Also the rampant
dragons, elaborate foliated brackets and royal Nayak
portraits are incorporated to its courtyards
pillars.
4)Thiruvanaikkaval
Another shrine dedicated to Shiva, it is located 6
Km east of Srirangam, named for a legendary elephant
that worshipped the linga. It has five walls and
seven gopurams with a finest Dravidian architecture
work.
5)Woraiyur
Apart from its historical importance of having been
the capital of the Chola dynasty, Woraiyur in Trichy
is also famous for its handmade cigars and handloom
sarees. The handmade cigars of Woraiyur were said to
be famous overseas, so much so that even Winston
Churchill is said to have relished them.
6)Samayapuram Mariamma
Lying at a distance of 11 km from Trichy in Lalgudi
taluk, is famous for the shrine of Goddess Mariamman.
It has a rich legendary and historical background.
7)Kailasamundaiyar Temple
Located amidst lush green paddyfields and sylvan
surrounding on the northern banks of the Uyyakondan
channel in a sleepy hamlet named Cholamadevi near
Thiruverumbur, is this dilapidated temple.
8)St. John's Church
Built in 1821,it is completely covered with louvered
doors
9)Museum
Located in Rani Mangammal Mahal the museum houses
many sculpures like Mahavirar, Buddha, Vishnu etc.
It also has fossil, pre history megalithic,
Paleolithic and Neolithic tools, Earthern moulds for
metals, Inscriptions and palm leaf
manuscripts,Ancient sculptures like thirumal
crawling krishna, thirumal with consorts, devi durga,
saint manickavasagar, Nataraja and chandra sekar.
10)Natharvali Dargah
Saint Baba Natharvali's body was laid to rest in a
place where it was once a Easwaran temple in a room.
Constructed with four doors according to Vedic
sastras and seppulingam is a witness to ghee lamp
burning near the grave of Baba.The saint breathed
his last on the 15th of the month of Ramzan in
Hijiri 417 and with a view to remember this day, the
first 17 days in the month of Ramzan every year
kanduri Urs is celebrated in a highly grand scale.
It is a unique feature to see Muslims, Hindus and
Christians assemble to pay their homage and warm
respects to Baba Natharvali on the eve of the
kanduri festival and seek his graceful blessings .
11)Sittannavasal
Located near Trichy is Sittanavasal, a site of an
ancient Jain monastery with fine fresco paintings in
a rock cave. Many of them are typical of the 9th
century Pandyan period and include exquisitely
detailed pictures of animals, fish, ducks, people
gathering lotuses from a pond and two dancing
figures. There are also inscriptions dating back to
the 9th and 10th centuries.
12)Puliancholai
On the foot hills of kollimalai ,a place of scenic
beauty is the puliyancholai. Full of greenish tree
sand tamarind groves ,this forest region is cool and
green with added attraction of the stream which is
the natural bathing area for the tourists throughout
the year.
